Blood test for nuchal translucency screeningIn order to carry out nuchal translucency screening it is necessary to take a small sample of the mother’s blood. This sample is then sent to the laboratory at The Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley Street, for specialist analysis. There are three methods of achieving this: Option One1. To have the blood sample taken prior to the scan at a separate appointment, so that the full test result can be given in person at the time of your scan. Option Two2. If option 1 is not convenient you may ask your midwife/surgery nurse to take a sample of blood, with equipment provided by us. You will then need to send the sample by Special Delivery to the laboratory and the result will be sent to us in readiness for your scan appointment. NB. The midwife/nurse at your surgery is not obliged to do this for you but on most occasions they are willing to help. Option Three3. If options 1 and 2 are not possible then you may have the blood sample taken at the time of your scan and we will call you (usually the next day) with your result. A copy of your report will then be forwarded by post. Whichever your preferred option, the arrangements will be explained and arranged by our appointment staff at the time of booking.
