Fetal Abnomaly Scan - 20 - 23 weeks gestation

NB. Fetal abnormalities are rare,
but if a potential problem is
detected, the findings will be
discussed with you and your
partner and further
counselling with your own
specialist or with the
specialist at your nearest
referral centre will be
arranged for you.



  
  • Best performed between 20 – 23 weeks
  • A detailed scan in which each area of the baby’s anatomy is examined to exclude structural abnormalities
  • Particular attention is paid to the brain, spine, heart, stomach, kidneys and limbs
  • Placental site is noted
  • The amount of amniotic fluid around the baby is assessed
  • As well as diagnostic structural anomalies, more subtle signs of possible chromosomal abnormality(soft markers) may be detected
