What you need to know about 3D/4D Imaging
(View Sample Images)
This technique uses modern technology to produce a 3D image which is instantly recognisable as a ‘real baby’ rather than the flat 2D black and white images which were previously available. 4D refers to the fact that the images are seen in real time (ie if the baby moves we actually see the movement happening) The images are displayed in a sepia tone.
There are some situations which prevent good clear images from being obtained and although we can often overcome these problems, there are occasions when good images are simply not possible.
The most common pitfalls are:-
- Not enough fluid in front of the baby’s face at the time of the scan
- Other structures obscuring the face - this may be the baby’s hands, umbilical cord or even the feet!
- The baby’s head being too low down within the pelvis (only usually a problem if the scan is attempted in the last few weeks of the pregnancy)

- The baby facing the mother’s back
- Twin pregnancies – much more difficult to obtain good images because the position is more oblique and there are more structures in the way ie arms x 4, legs x4, umbilical cord x2. It is quite common to be able to get good images of one baby but not the other.
* THE RECOMMENDED TIME FOR 3D/4D IMAGING IS 28-32 WEEKS *
